Bal Gopal (divine child) Krishna. This small antique devotional baby Krishna statue is cast from heavy, solid bronze, depicted in a crawling posture carrying a butter sweet in his hand. He is in eastern tribal costume, wearing ornate jewellery and an elaborate headdress.
Baby Krishnas are highly collectable and sought after, particularly regional pieces that vary from the more proscribed city styles.
Also called a Ladoo Gopal after the sweet treat that he carries in his hand. This statue has a dark patina commensurate with age and use, is in excellent condition and stands upright without need for a supporting stand. 19th century, from Orissa Provence, far eastern India.
